How To Make Self-Building A Reality

Finding your dream home is sometimes akin to finding a needle in a haystack, a seemingly impossible task. You could be looking for months, or even many years, before you find a property that ticks all the necessary boxes in your preferred location.

If your frustrations of trying to find the perfect place are beginning to boil over then perhaps consider self-building.

According to data released by construction industry analyst Barbour ABI, around 18,000 self-building applications were submitted in the UK in 2015, slightly up from the previous year. This is music to the ears of the government who in response to the growing national housing shortage are keen to double the number of self-build homes built in this country by 2020.

The Conservatives have even made around £350million available to the self-building market and removed some of the obstacles that sometimes prevent people from realising such dreams in the hope that it will get Britain building.

Sold on the idea? Here are some of the steps you need to take during a self-build project:

Do your research

Some people understandably feel a little bit intimidated by the prospect of self-building but there are lots of online resources you can use to inform yourself of what’s involved, such as the Self Build Portal and the Self Build Guide.

Pinpoint a plot

Much land has been freed up by the Chancellor in recent times and local authorities are actively being encouraged to cut the red tape and make more plots available to self-builders. You can also locate available plots via a local estate agent or sites like Plot Browser.

Decide on your budget

Work out what your budget is and try as much as you can to stick to it. Whilst you should account for any potential problems that may arise during the self-build process, resist the temptation to spend beyond your means.

Choose a reliable designer

Check out the credentials and expertise of your chosen designer before appointing them to the job of creating your proposed new house. Provide them with a detailed specification of exactly what you want including how many key areas e.g. bedrooms, bathrooms should be accommodated within the design and where they need to be situated.

And of course, don’t forget to stipulate the inclusion of aïr, the world’s most captivating bi-fold and lift & slide doors in your custom-built house. Find your nearest aïr retailer by inputting your postcode.
