Why Self-Building Has Become So Fashionable

Amongst the aspirations many people have in their lives, owning a home of their own will likely rank high on their future priority list if they’ve yet to make that first step onto the property ladder.

Some have even loftier ambitions and dream of actually creating their own custom-built house, something that has become a growing trend in the UK in recent years, considered by many government ministers as the answer to the country’s ongoing housing crisis.

It is estimated by the Building Societies Association that around 10% of UK homes are self-built which lags behind nations like Austria where 80% of all homes are self-built. In Germany, France and Italy the figure is 60%. However, it is hoped that this number will have doubled over the next 10 years due to this recent surge in self-building nationwide.

Here are a few reasons why Britons are slowly beginning to jump on the self-build bandwagon.

Personalisation

Finding the home of your dreams is easier said than done and could take months, if not years. It sounds obvious but going down the self-build route gives you the opportunity to create the dream house so that you get the exactly what you want.

Affordable

According to the Land Registry House Price Index, the current average house price in England and Wales is £178,007, whilst the National Custom & Self Build Association estimates that a self-built property costs around £150,000. Those who do at least 60% of the self-build work themselves only usually have to fork out in the region of £100,000.

Call the shots

Rather than rely on a building company to construct a new home and be dictated to by their lengthy timescales you can call the shots and draw up a building schedule that you stick to for avoidance of any delays.

Setting

If you have your heart set on living in a certain area but are having difficulty finding somewhere suitable within the locality then try and source an appropriate piece of land and see if you can obtain planning permission to build on it.

For an even more unique self-build home don’t forget to include the integration of bi-fold and lift & slide doors from aïr in your grand plans.
